Northwich entered the FA Cup in the Second Qualifying Round, and were drawn at Home against East Midlands Counties Football League side Bardon Hill on 26 September 2009.[3] An 8-0 win saw Northwich through to the Third Qualifying Round, with 5 of the being goals scored by Mark Danks, who was named Player of the Round for his performance.[4]
Following their victory, Northwich were drawn at Home tie against Chorley F.C. from the Northern Premier League Division One. Another hatrick from Mark Danks saw Northwich progress to the final Qualifying Round following a 4-1 win.[5]
In the Fourth Qualifying Round, Northwich were drawn against F.C. United of Manchester, the breakaway club of Manchester United. This was the first time that FC United had reached the Fourth Qualifying Round, and was described by their manager Karl Marginson as being the 'biggest game in the club's history' at the time.[6] The largest crowd of the season up until that point, 2,615, witnessed Northwich defeat FC United 3-0 and progress to the First Round Proper, with the chance of drawing a Football League side.[7]
The reward for their victory was a dream home tie against one of the Football League 'big boys', Charlton Athletic, the second highest ranked team in the competition at that point, who were 2nd in League Two. The match was broadcast live on ITV1, with viewers attracted by the chance of a giant-killing. After a game which saw Northwich pressurising Charlton at every opportunity, after just five minutes on the pitch, Wayne Riley scored the only goal of the game for Northwich in the 82nd minute. The win was described as the most famous win in the club's history.[8]
